take a break dave

I did. I'm just thinking we didn't need 'em last year at the gen stage. 2 people out of the entire line-up used them last year. It really does tick me off when people have the attitude Jon does about this. ugh.

OK... lets talk attitude. I joke and I have attitude issues... youre compleatly rude and you dont?

Anyway!! Next time you call for demos you need to be clear that it doesnt apply to everyone. Next time you open something up and welcome who ever to DJ.. YOU NEED TO BE CLEAR to EVERYONE that its really not open for everyone. ya feel me?

I feel you were out of line with some of your comments back to me regarding fellowship.

Lastly you describe the Gen Stage as a job... you get payed for jobs... last i checked the Gen Stage was non paying... so i wouldnt really call that a job.

Its all good tho... i forgive ya man! Wink

Yup... I can be very rude at times. Now is probably one of them. Sorry.

Anyway!! Next time you call for demos you need to be clear that it doesnt apply to everyone. Next time you open something up and welcome who ever to DJ.. YOU NEED TO BE CLEAR to EVERYONE that its really not open for everyone. ya feel me?

The call was for the main stage. Any that weren't selected for that stage were going to be offered the generator stage. For that stage, we will have turntables for at least 1 guy.  The generator stage is a different story for various reasons, but not b/c we're anti-vinyl. One GOOD reason is b/c the place is a major dust bowl. Tons of dust. It works fine in the barn, but not in the open air outside right by the road and in 90 degree plus heat.

I feel you were out of line with some of your comments back to be regarding fellowship.

I jumped to the extreme on the racist statement, but what I was getting from your posts is what I was getting from your posts. I do feel like you said that if we don't have vinyl, we're not worthy of your presence. Sorry. That's how I took it.

Lastly you describe the Gen Stage as a job... you get payed for jobs... last i checked the Gen Stage was non paying.
It is a job. Not all jobs provide pay. Internships for examples. In those positions, you are required to act professional and to meet all of the job duties w/o any compensation.

Its all good tho... i forgive ya man!
What's there to forgive. What have I said that really has hurt you?

so anyone down for a traktor tag team set at the generator stage??   Grin

Maybe ?  What does a traktor tag team involve... track selection ... haha

I use traktor, but let me know what you were thinking

I ment 2 laptops running traktor into a dj mixer...  so we could have 8 decks going pretty much...  bouncing beats back and forth for an hour or so straight...  kinda like what you see Chris Liebing and Speedy J doing on the Traktor demo videos and the Traktor 3 Tutorial DVD

the generator stage not being a paying gig, not having a dance floor, and requiring us to buy tickets is probably whats gonna end up holding us back from coming out. i would really love to get together and hang with everyone even if i had to pay for tix its just for us its gonna really really really cost us a lot to come out. well over a thousand dollars in lost work hours as neither of us have paid vacation and its also gonna be 11+ hours each way drive plus cost of 2 tickets and not getting paid to play. its gonna be really hard for us to make it. i know we were talking about selling glowsticks but i would have to convince my wife that we are gonna make back all the money we'd lose from taking time off, gas, glowstick costs, ticket and booth expenses... im not thinking its looking to likely... im pretty disappointed right now. the only way we'd be able to come is if somehow we both got approved for paid vacation...then it might be possible.

Rod, I'm with you. I totally understand that. You don't make money on cstone. You go and attend because you love it. That's the reason. If money is tight, you shouldn't go.

I go by myself, carpool, camp and have a provided ticket and it still costs me $500 at minimum to attend... with paid vacation. This year, I'll get some cash, but it's still going to COST more than I'll make.

I'm serious, if it's a matter of causing money problems, you shouldn't go. In fact, I can't think of a single headliner we've booked who isn't loosing money on this.

Shiloh's basically doing it at cost. Stryke's taking 3/4 of what he'd normally get. Kyle's doing it for a wee more than gas money. I think Doug's hourly rate for this fest is about $0.25 an hour counting the planning time.

Seriously, nobody associated with the stage is going to be making a DIME on the show. Well.... maybe the cstone ppl, but maybe not. They could have spent the $9k budget elsewhere and attrack more people. We're still on the roster b/c we fit into the "Art and community" thing they always do with cstone.

what may end up happening is i may get paid vaca and she wont and i may come by myself for a couple of days but then shes gonna be disappointed cuz i know she wants to go... what sucks is she will get paid vaca but she just started a new job and doesnt get it for like a year (i think). im a contract worker but the firm i work through is a high end IT firm and they really do take care of me. they gave me paid vaca for a week for our honeymoon and im not "entitled" to any paid but ive really made them some good money and they try to keep me happy  Wink im fairly confidant that i can get a couple of days but im pretty sure she can't... so we'll have to see. i really dont mind spending a couple of hundred or even $500.00 but we'd be talking over $1-2K if we both came when everything is said and done. And when your saving for a down payment... thats a lot of $$$

This is the only post I will post on this thread.  With that being said here are some simple things I would like to say.

First and foremost it is a huge honor to be responsible for the generator stage for tastyfresh.com.  I am grateful to Dave for the unbelievable honor to head this project up this year.  I am so humbled to be able to lead this effort.  Jeremy Kadinger last year did an unbelievable job.  I am hoping to duplicate the greatness he led things in and to take a couple things farther.

The generator stage has many purposes, but one of the main purposes is to let people know about the Afterhours program at night.  Yes, it is a place to showcase skills.  It is a great place to fellowship, but in collecting donations, setting up, and actually running the stage it is extremely important to know the purpose of the stage.  It is to funnel people's brains into thinking of going to the Afterhours event each and every night.  Obviously this is not a paid gig.  We know that.  We also know that there are well over 100 bands, artists, groups, and people that perform at the Festival for free each and every year to get their name out.  It is an absolute privledge to play this stage.  I am interested in giving the best slots to guys who understand this fact.

Turntables will not be welcome at the generator stage.  That was my call and I am standing by it.  Dave is standing by my decision and I appreciate his support.  Dave is a great friend of mine and we hang out now probably once a week.  He understands my heart in this.  I will explain in detail below.

No Turntables:

I decided this in mid February and let the other guys who are helping to plan Afterhours (Dave, Kevin, & Jeremy K.) of my intentions and why.  I have their total support and moved forward on this thinking because of this.  Here are the facts:

This is a generator stage.  We are running our gear off a Honda generator.  It is of the utmost importance to keep things at this stage simplistic and running smoothly.  That involves gear switching, storage of gear and the overall booth (which we need to build).  The less amount of different media we use the better our flow for the week will be on keeping seamless music going for the hours we are allowed to use the stage.

I personally decided to go with industry-standard cdj1000s and a pioneer mixer.  This is current industry standard gear, although the pioneer mixer could be debated(which I will not engage with anyone on this).  I also wanted to allow the next wave of computer application programs as they are the next industry standard as of right now(could be debated I will not debate this).

This email still stands for those interested:

Hey I'm Doug Theodore and I am running the generator stage at this year's Cornerstone Music Festival.  Right now we are in the process of booking DJs for the Tent.  Since I have received a demo from you for Afterhours and I know of your skills…you are more than welcome to an hour time slot at our humble stage.  I have some of the guys who are actually playing Afterhours who are booked in slots at the generator stage as I gave them first choice.  If you are interested in spinning at this stage at the festival I need to know what days you are going to be at the festival.  I can plug you in to a number of late morning and afternoon slots.  I am giving all Afterhours demo submission guys the first opportunity to spin if they want it.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

1.You still need to purchase a ticket to get into the festival and this is a non-paid booking.
2.You need to figure out lodging for yourself. (most of us camp on the premises)
3.The Generator stage gear list is either
                a.            2 pioneer cdj1000's & a mixer (Afterhours Generator stage provides)
or
                b.            a laptop and ONE controller (which is provided by the artist themselves)
4.No turntables are used for various reasons
5.This is a first come first serve basis

Lastly If you are interested just simply email me back with the dates you are gonna be at the fest and your best phone #  and then we can set up a phone interview so you know what I expect out of you while you spin and so I can touch base with ya.

Looking forward to it

Doug

And when your saving for a down payment... thats a lot of $$$

That right there is a GOOD reason to not come.

Dave is standing by my decision and I appreciate his support.
Although... maybe a bit too nazi-like... but still.

"There is a difference between a Turntablist and a DJ; one of them is an art"

Quote from Scott Blackwell at the DJ clinic at the Underground 2002.

Is this a good time to bring that up...  smiley18

Jeepers....This is so stupid....

Think about this for a minute...

Would you want your turntables getting filled up with dust for 5 days?  Probably not.

As for this whole "Turntables in the booth" thing....I still see them.  Usually they have CDs laying on top of them.  Nothing wrong with vinyl.  I used vinyl for 10 years before going to CD,  and then Ableton.  People use different mediums to express themselves.  Saying that someone is a real dj if they only use vinyl is saying something like "Only real painters use oil paint.  Those watercolor guys are just fakers."  See how stupid that sounds?  Knowing how much of a charged subject that is amongst the electronic music community AS A WHOLE rigjht now,  I suggest not even joking about it.  Jon,  you may have been joking,  but you came across as a complete {mmm...tasty} there.  I'm sure you're a good guy,  but it's the power of internet perception,  and not being able to see the wink or feel the delivery.

Now....All that being said...

The generator stage is pretty neat.  If some of you don't want to use it because of no turntables,  then I'm sorry you feel that way.  However,  please don't cheapen the value of what we're doing.  I'm sorry we can't get people into the festival to play the generator stage,  but it's not an official stage.  Cornerstone policy says we can't pay people to play the generator.  It's there on the website...Here's the generator stage official info.  Check it,  yo! We'd still love for everyone to be a part of the fun though.

Can you all play nice now...Please?

The irony is that YOU can pay to play on our stage. Last year we had bands BEGGING us to play our... van. We could have made a killing. But... we kept it real with djs.

It's true - what Dave says. To play the Fat Calf stage cost $50 bucks.  Undecided
