We're NOT going to have turntables. Sorry. Not going to. There's no need. If you can't play on CD or a laptop, you're not playing that stage. Period.
As far "real" djs... get over it. Most have moved on now to either CD or some form of laptop and controller. To limit your opinion of what a DJ is to vinyl is going to keep you from succeeding as a professional DJ.
Stryke may use vinyl, but it's ONLY to control Traktor. He always brings CDs as well to control Traktor if he needs to. He's willing to not be limited by a medium.
Why aren't you?

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Dave ur funny... really! you are. There is an ART to DJing that is lost when the turntables are taken away. Technology has made you people lazy!
YOU CAN NOT FAKE A SET WITH VINYL!!! I guess we would all be SuperStar DJs if we had a program that beatmatched for us!
But really! Were all DJs here... so why not cater to all instead of singling out? I was really looking 4ward to flying up to jam with you guys on the generator stage... but that came to a quick hault when learning of the biast set up.
Dont be so quick to forget the roots of the scene.

There was an art to setting type on a movable type press in the 1600s too. That has almost completely been lost today. The thing in, nobody could create something as simple as a drop shadow using a movable type press. In fact, that never really was an easy thing to do until the computer.
Truthfully, the movable type press, while technically a tool of art, limited our ability as graphic designers to be creative and innovative. There was a need a desire to for this and thus... people moved on to newer technology. Better? Maybe... maybe not. It's different and allows for more freedom than before, but that does not mean that it made the designer lazy.

If your perspective is that beatmatching is all there is to being a DJ, then you don't need to play the generator stage or the main stage either. Not only that, but it WILL hold you back as a professional DJ.

1) It takes up more space and means we would have to cut back on other gear.
2) You and maybe 2 or 3 others would be the ONLY ones using it out of the week.
3) Very few professional DJs today still play vinyl and many clubs no longer install turntables.
It's not about forgetting the roots. You never do that. In fact, that's one reason why "scratch" systems still exist.
It's time for you to wise up and get professional on this issue. After all, even
Grandmaster Flash is using Traktor Scratch now
.
Maybe if you learned a bit about that system, you would know that it doesn't prevent you from manually beatmatching and that you still have to do manual work with it. Heck, I could upload a mix now that I did with Traktor Monday night with a HORRIBLE trainwreck.

I've never claimed that a DJ who doesn't spin vinyl isn't a real DJ, but the generator stage is the exact opposite of a "professional" gig (not only not paying, but you have to pay quite a bit to be able to play), which makes me much less inclined to bend for it. All the gigs I've been playing lately have had turntables in the DJ booth, and until that changes, I'm perfectly happy with my current configuration (Serato + vinyl).

AMEN brother! I gig weekly.. and get payed for it. and just like Ethan said, EVERY set up that i play/see has turntables... From clubs to bars and even restraunts.
and for the record the whole "real" dj comment was more or less a joke!
And i know that it takes a bit more than beatmatching to dj... but thats where it starts. its the basic skill that seperates the good from the not so good. there is no point in the mix if the beats arent matched... but i guess there is no point in that skill if you have a program do it for you... right?

I still love vinyl control, I have decks at home that I use traktor 3.3 with. I try to use both worlds together. I'll beatmatch, automatch, whatever I feel like really. I can put on a better set with turntables just because its how I learned to play, its intuitive for me. I'm sure once I get a controller I like it will be the same way. Will the actual kit list be posted for the Afterhours so we can plan our sets. Its true that most places still have decks available, CDj's have become real popular in the past few years though, I would think those are becoming the new standard, mostly because of the digital medium, the actuall platter isn't fun to work with like vinyl.

I'll give you fun and personal preference, but I won't stand for demanding to have your way in a manner that demeans the other. Sorry Jon. Even if you were joking, it's clear that's the way you feel. I don't like that attitude.
I've got no beef with Ethan for what he said. Nor Matt. It all has to do with attitude. It's the attitude that nothing is better than vinyl that will hold you back. It's being inflexible that will hold you back. That's what I'm reacting to here.
Matt, we'll get the kit stuff straightened out. Soonish. Tuesday night is going to be very busy and I already know we need 2 setups so... yeah... we gotta have that talk.

OK, wow. My attitude? I never said that nothing was better than vinyl... Its MY prefered medium... and i found your whloe "NO TURNTABLES" thing insulting. I felt that djs who used them were singled out, and your reply was bordering rude.
Why was i insulted you ask?
I was going to pay to fly to CS, pay my lodging, & take 3 days off work to play a NON PAYING gig at the generator stage. But it wasnt about that for me... i really wanted to fellowship with you guys and to get to meet some of you... but that was befor all of this. Alot of potential will be missed due to your biast/lazy/selfish reasoning.
And PS! I never demanded anything... I just wanted the same chance everyone else who is NOT vinyl has... but i guess thats to much to ask.

So... no vinyl = you no want to come. The draw for fellowship is limited to the availability of vinyl?
Do I have that right? We're only worth hanging out with if vinyl is there too. That's what I've been hearing you say all this time. I'm telling you that me hearing this is probably more insulting than you hearing that vinyl won't be there. The worthiness of fellowshipping with people is solely determined by vinyl. Wow... That's almost like a form of racism. I'm not vinyl enough.

All jobs have requirements. The requirement for THIS job is that you do not use vinyl. If you cannot meet that qualification, then you are not qualified for that job. It's not about being fair, it's about doing what is required and expected.

Every Club in Louisville and Indianapolis has a set of turntables. I use serato with my turntables. That's what I'm comfortable with. How many CDJ decks you guys have on the booth that would not leave enough room for two turntables (battle style)? I think you guys are just trying to make a point. I will start practicing with the internal mode because I don't have the money to buy a controller to start practicing with yet so maybe I shouldn't play. What kind of cd decks are you going to have?

I did. I'm just thinking we didn't need 'em last year at the gen stage. 2 people out of the entire line-up used them last year. It really does tick me off when people have the attitude Jon does about this. ugh.
