Simple rule is, if you dont like it, dont play it. Want to have gigs with music you like? Start your own.
Start small, see how it goes. If its good, it will pull a crowd : )

I can agree with that, since it has worked with me. However, the area where I'm at, everytime I play, they expect some hard hitting DnB, because if you read my bio, its what I actually started playing in the first place. I like psytrance too, and breaks and prog house...
It is all about working the crowd yes... also, try sneaking some beats in, even from a different style, pick up on the reaction, yay on nay is all youll get, no booing... hehe

All very valid points, thanks guys! I guess in the end it's more about defining yourself than defining your music.

Since I started I've been set on drum n bass and trance. But listening to Doug and ChrisH's sets, they got me hooked on electro, prog. house. Much better house coming out than when I started. Course I sometimes play breaks since its the slower version of drum n bass, hehe, I like funky and electro breaks as well.

I guess the best way to learn is going to have to be to start actually playing for people and learn how to work a crowd.

I am the KING of not picking a style. Traditionally people know me for some form of house. But my sets usually never stay in one playground. I'll start in house and switch to breaks, maybe I'll speed it up to something a bit more progressive, maybe even switch to trance. My point is....yes.
and you said I was trying to find myself since I was producing more than one genre

Philosophical Dance=2nd funniest moment of WMC 2006.
In an A&R workshop at the conference, some girl was trying to figure out why her music wouldn't sell. She described to John Parker, the A&R Director of Robbins Entertainment(the guy who found Cascada, DJ Encore, DJ Sammy, Eric Prydz, Lucas Prada, Darude, DHT, etc....) her music as "Philosophical Dance."
He, of course, asked why that name for the genre...
She said "It's music that makes you think."
John told her to go back to her room and give it some serious thought, and that he could figure out the problem.

So what's the funniest moment?
That is funny. I heard some artist on another forum post some "philisophical" music, and it was the most awful thing...oh my goodness it was horrible. And when people tried to explain that the song was "not the greatest...", the reply we got was "this song is beautiful". Needless to say, the only people catching on are the artists that make it.

I think over the years I have learned that you need to play the music you are passionate about. You'll put a set together much better if you are into the tracks you are serving up. You need to enjoy what you are doing, otherwise it doesn't work well, and there are no rules...play what you want.
this is true. to a certain extent, the crowd chooses the generalities that you play, such as the broader genre part of it, but YOU choose the artists. that way, you can slowly work them into your style. lead in to what you want. that's what i'm forced to do on the radio, i play the styles for them, but i lead into what it is that i am passionate about, and so on, and i get people who HATE my styles telling me they like my times on the air more than anybody else in the station.
