my 1990 honda accord is totally dead. i took it to the repair shop, and the estimate they quoted me was double the value of my $2000 car (it needed a motor swap, clutch, and various other things).

That being said, I will be buying an older used car with cash (not financing anything) this weekend, with a budget of about $1500 - $2000. I will be looking for something in the late 80's early 90's years range either a 2 door or 4 door sedan. my car knowledge is extremely limited, because i only know how to do basic maintenance on my own, such as oil changes, battery replacement type stuff, etc. i already know what car i want, but need advice in the actual transaction of buying the car from a private seller.

i wanted to ask all of you guys for any tips you had on things to look for and or check out during a test drive / basic inspection of a used car from a private seller.

i have been reading guides online and just wanted a second opinion. any helpful suggestions?

1-Do you have an Autozone close by?  If you testdrive anything, take it there and have them run an OBD(on board display) diagnostics.  They'll usually show a record of any recent issues. They offer it free of charge.

2-See if the catalytic converter is standard or California emissions. The CE ones aost 4X as much as the standard and theres sometimes multiple converters on the exhaust system.  If you live in cali...make sure the exhaust system looks good. Run it idle and look for any fumes or smoke leaking out under the car other than the exhaust pipe.

3- tires. $ has gone way up the last few yrs. 3yrs ago,$300 for 4x16". Last week, $200 for 2x 15"

x2, you usually can swing by a shop and let them take a look at it, what I did when I bought the car I currently drive.
