I've read the comments here and being a Christian who has been in the Secular scene for quite some time now, I totally agree with the idea that we as Christian's need to think outside the box and take the material to the masses, keeping it just in the Christian realm is doing none of you any good nor is it reaching those who could come to know Christ, by us stepping outside the box and pushing your music to the masses secularly speaking you are doing Gods work, you're reaching individuals who might never come to Christ in any other way. On that note that is the point of "Radiate", the event Chris and I are going to do, I'm bringing the Christian scene to a whole new level and pushing it to a broader audience who needs this music more than anyone.

This thread is so early 2000's...there I said it.
LOL, we used to argue about this on the Found boards and mailing list in 1998.

I wasn't sure a "Christian market" existed for any music anymore, other than praise and worship.
Has anyone noticed this? I'll be honest, I stopped paying attention to Christian music a while back, and I just follow particular artists I like. But recently I've been checking out a number of blogs and Christian music sites, and it seems there's an exodus in the entire scene, with anything that's not praise and worship striving to be less recognized as Christians and more recognized as musicians. And I think this is awesome. Anyone else seeing this trend? (I think Tooth and Nail have a LOT to do with this.)

@ thepudd . . yes I noticed it. Escpecially in the indy scene. They set up labels outside the christian box and hooked up with some good indy-distributors. Now their music is recognized, has airplay and they play everywhere.

I don't think it's a bad thing to say you're a Christian dj/producer and letting that be known to the masses but honestly, the way you live your life, the music you play and how you treat people will reflect your beliefs, those things alone will tell people that you are Christian because as the name of my event "Radiate" represents, the glory of Christ will radiate from within to the masses and will be obvious to everyone you meet, it should go without saying, without marketing yourself as a Christian, it's how you live your life not what you say that is important. Andy Hunter is successful not because he goes around telling everyone he's Christian, that just goes without saying, he's successful because he just makes good music with positive Christian based lyrics instilled into most of his material, he's subtle with his material and that's ok. The content of his music will speak to the hearts and minds of anyone who listens to it and if they are truly listening, if they are truly connected then the message of Andy's music is moving within them and God will speak to them. That's the way all of you that produce and dj should market yourself, get yourself into the Winter Music Conference, get booked at secular events and you to, if it's Gods will, should gain success just as Andy has. That's the way I see it folks and I'm sticking to it.

Apparently a simple "yes" or "no" answer is not possible
Andy Hunter deserves mad props for being one of the first Christian Artists to have his stuff released by Nettwerk and to tour with Tiesto, not to mention being used in so many movies, TV shows, and video games.
However, who was his second album released by? Sparrow/EMI. (Not Nettwerk)
Where do most of Andy's gigs get booked, and where does he make most of his money?
Here in the U.S. and the majority of it is Christian Youth Events, Festivals, etc.
Where is most of Andy's fan base? Christian Dance Music fans.
How well known is Andy in the secular scene?
He's made some great accomplishments (Tiesto, Movies, etc) but most people in the Secular scene don't know who he is (yet).
Who's name is all over these boards, most often featured in the Tasty E-zine?
Andy Hunter.
And you ask if a market exists?
I think Andy is a pretty good example of it exisiting.

being a part of the regular scene, and not being seperate from it...
WHAT IS TASTYFRESH?
Why don't we forget about this place and just post on the GU boards or somewhere else?
Because we get support and encouragment from each other here.
We can come here and talk to people who understand who we are and what we are doing, and get our second wind to go back out into the regular scene.
What's wrong with having music that supports?

this is true... I've found on so many myspace pages and shoutlife pages that kids who list favorite Christian artists will list a lot of popular Christian bands like Switchfoot, Skillet, Flyleaf, and Andy Hunter in the same list... he is pretty popular to Christians who aren't really a part of the "dance culture" I'm sure a lot of those same kids would like a lot of Tastyfresh's members music as well they just don't know it exists.
personally, I love having both dance music meant for the "scene" and music meant for Christians... I love tracks like Waves of Living Water - Deep Calls To Deep, Siminz - I Surrender, PTS - Running Over Me, Ikon - Feel It, etc...

Carey, you and I are a dying breed.
I want to say so much more, but let's be honest. No matter what I say, I'm never gonna get my point across.
It's sad.
I will say this. As long as I live, I will always be a Christian first who is a DJ, promoter, wanna-be producer (lol), etc. I see it this way. I choose to be in the public eye. That makes me accountable to those who may come across my website, mixsets, etc. I want to represent Christ. That does not mean I will be playing all worship remixes and under produced tracks from only Christian artists. I will play great tracks that uplift, encourage, edify and rock the dancefloor. I will never candy coat the fact that I am a follower of Jesus Christ. He died for my sins and opened the door to Heaven for this wretch. The least I can do is be open about who I am.

WHAT IS TASTYFRESH?
It's a community. It's not a market. There's a world of difference between the two.
If you want proof of that, look at how many of us have release music here and how only a few people from TF ever buy it. If we don't support our own, what makes you think the general market does?
RE: Andy Hunter
Andy seems to be an exception. You might also want to note that his tour date page on his site is completely empty. His message boards are very slow moving. Whenever I do see an AH album in a Christian bookstore, it's in the discount bin. That's not where the hot sellers go.
I'm sure things will change for a while with the new album, but let's be honest here... if Andy survives on Christian bookings and music sales, he's not getting all that many. Playing one show out a month isn't making a living and neither is selling 1,000 cds over 3 months. The one thing he has that others don't here is a label large enough that it can afford to market him. Andy's money is for licensing and that's why Nettwerk wanted him back above all.
I love Andy to death, but an exception does not make a rule.

But Chris, let's be honest here... outside of a reference to Cast the Fire, no where on your own page (
www.dj404.com
or
www.myspace.com/dj404
) do you even associate yourself with Christians and no where do you mention that you ARE a Christian. So... I'm pretty confused here. What's the difference between your presentation and say Doug Theodore's? Where is this mega-sign on the web that you are a Christian? Where is the evidence that you are a Christian first? In fact, there's more evidence on Andy's site that he's a Christian than yours.

Well honestly, I had drank the "I'm a DJ who is a Christian, not a Christian DJ" Kool-aid the last time I redid my site and my myspace. It was a moment of weakness in an attempt to try to get booked at more secular shows. I have meant to go back and change it but have since forgotten it.
I'm actually pretty embarrassed about it.

By the way, I am not trying to stir anything up other than our love for God in each other. When I see people get the mindset that there is no need to market our music and talents to Christians, it makes me wonder what else have we gotten the mindset of?
