If you still find it confusing, just ignore the thread. I think at least Carey and I are starting to make progress in what has become a therapy session for the two of us. Kinda like marriage counseling.
I think it is slightly confusing, but it's also interesting so I'm not going to ignore it. I'll just keep up-to-date with your counseling. Wink

Dave! See... this is a good goal! In all our discussions about banned conversations and everything... this is what I dream about as the outcome! I know that's not a final say kindof thing... but that's what's in my mind.

one problem, this conversation isn't one of the banned types. Over the course of several years, the banned conversations never led to what Carey and I are doing right now. Only the opposite happened.

What stats do you have? Smiley

I haven't done an international poll or anything, but no one in my circles have 'met' a DJ let alone care about clubs. I get about 10 emails a month from Christians who 'stumble' onto the music and fall in love with it. Most would claim to be in a similar situation...loving the music without a care for the 'scene'.

I think one reason as to why dance music does not have selling power to christians (ie. a market) is that there is not a place to go to hear it live.

Skillet...popular because they are awesome live
Newsboys...great live

Great point!  I don't see why concerts wouldn't work in the same way though. It doesn't have to be a rave.
I am playing at a rock n' roll concert this summer at an annual local music festival. That should be interesting...playing to a 30's-something Christian rock audience. But I welcome the opportunity, and I think these opportunities are presented to us ALL OVER the place. I think there's still a mindset about listening to someone push buttons and move sliders....A DJ just doesn't generate the same appeal as a rock band.

I can't argue with that... but maybe it's a coincidence? This conversation has certainly had it's argumentative stages.

I think you make a good point about "who exactly buys dance music?"

Some people for their own personal listening pleasure, some as a DJ tool to play out.

When most people buy a Rock CD, it isn't to perform with, it's just to jam to.

If they want to perform Rock Music they'll go buy a guitar or something.

That's a HUGE way our musical genre is different from some of the others out there.

I remember hearing one year that turntables outsold guitars for Christmas.

Some people just view dance music as an experience you have when you go to the club, but don't think of listening to it at home or in the car.

When you go to hear a DJ perform they don't necessarily play "their hit song" and if you buy their CD you might not hear what they perfomed on it.

In this way that's why I think some people like Sheltershed, Cloud2Ground, Prophetica, The World Wide Message Tribe etc had/have an edge on some of the other DJs with album sales at live shows.  You CAN go pick up one of their CDs and hear what you just heard live.

I see Andy Hunter's success in that way somewhat, I know he doesn't do live performances of his album material, he DJ's out, but his albums have the kind of music people can just listen to and enjoy for the musical value, and they are pretty accessible to the general public.

People like BT, Tiesto, Oakenfold, Darude etc kinda have that going for them too, and they are some of the biggest names.

There are other people like me out there that enjoy the music just because they like it, or else those guys wouldn't sell albums.

We even have a few people people here, like Kneesha or Cindy for example, who don't really perform or DJ out, but just enjoy the music.

I do think that is one thing they had right in the "old days"

They released a certain number of "general public access" albums along with the "more geared towards DJs" type of stuff.

So I guess an important question is who are you making your music for?

1) DJs to play out

2) the average joe to listen to

It can be both, but it's tough to do that.

The most any N*Soul CD ever sold as far as I know is 5,000 copies. That's it. I will grant you that Sheltershed and Prophetica released albums too late after the initial collapse so they never never had the same advantage that WWMT did, but come on... 5,000 was during WWMT's time. That's a VERY small run for CDs and it was FM that had the 5,000 copies.

Yup... and now they're feeling silly b/c that was also the year that CDs started to really take off and mp3s were already starting to show up on the horizon.

Ok, but that's 5000 that they actually sold and they didn't have to give away.

I would say that The World Wide Message Tribe's "Jumping In The House Of God" sold more than that, but that album did not release on N-Soul.

That's not much of a point now since that same label has to give it away today since the market has changed. We're dealing with today's market, not yesterday's.

Maybe... it's possible. Warner Alliance should have a better distribution system. Still... it was a rare sight in the stores.

The label's dead now Dave, and they don't have new music.

You can't succeed selling 10 year old CDs, of course they have to give them away!  Huh

I still think what I said has value in today's market.

I was talking about 2000. Not today. Not those albums. But yeah... the label is dead. Somebody PLEASE tell Phillip.

BTU had to give away their music at Cstone this year. Nobody could see anything. Same last year. Same the year before. Rad Rockers hasn't carried dance music in forever b/c it doesn't sell. The market doesn't exist for it.
