yeah, first one I've seen before and saved a good while back. But that Korg pad you plug that one up to a pc and use it in software. Best example would be a MPC2000, now you can definitely write something on it of quality and not touch software.

On the first: Did you notice the usb cord coming out of the back? It's connected to a computer. He's triggering loops (most likely in Ableton). That box has no sampling or synthesis capabilities.
On the second: Yeah... that's old skool.

On the subject any one good some good tips to get good at drumming up some rythms on those pads! I got the trigger finger. But i must admit i didnt get far with me drum lessons!
