outside using the pitch slider to beat match, I've only messed with it during when I was messing around scratching.  You can usually make some melody if you get a scratch record with a continuous tone.  Grin

this is not really a good effect to use on the fly.  I think most djs who have experience will stay away from this one.  You can pitch alot, but then you must deal with the other factors of the track when you drastically do this.  If you cd decks/vinyl/mp3s have tempo lock than you can do this to a point, but I don't really think you are gonna have success to the point of taking a track of 130 down to 100.  Only my opinion though.

Every time I heard a DJ use the pitch control in an attempt to create an effect usually ends up sounding like he's an inexperienced dj who has no clue what he is doing. Seriously, no good ever ever ever.

I haven't really messed around with that too much, although if you have a good pitch lock on whatever decks or software you're using, jumping the equivalent of changing the 33/45 switch on a turntable can be an interesting way of working in a few downtempo or d'n'b tracks if most of your set is in the 120-140 bpm range, or vice versa.

Also, one time I saw a DJ use drastic pitch changes to good effect where he was cutting in and out with the crossfader on a continuous tone (not a simple sine wave though, I wouldn't be surprised if it was from the breakdown of a record he was spinning) and working the pitch on the turntable from low to high then dropping it again while it was cut out for a really cool effect (probably pulling the record back again as he dropped the pitch back).

Like any effect, though, drastic pitch changes are probably something you wouldn't want do often (with the possible exception of if you're scratching), and it's something you wouldn't want to do when you're playing out unless you really know what you're doing.

I think what you may be seeing is just Djing.  When you get better you don't have to touch your records anymore, or cds etc.  You use the pitch up and down , sometimes drastically to match the tempo.

As already said, don't do it.  There isn't any effect worth doing that involves the pitch slider, in my opinion.  $.02
