Compressors : Well you can only do so much reading. I'd try a few demos. The better software compressors are the Waves API 2500, UAD mentioned, Sonalkis, Alogrithmix (expensive). These are some of the top I see used.
Hardware: I understand that hardware is more, I use alot of software compressors etc in Logic & UAD, then use the hardware for bus compression and mastering. Just depends on what your needs are.
- here's some samples I did:

- Are there huge differences between API, SSL and Neve?
- Did they set out to make products different from each other? What do each do best?
- oh, also forgot to add this company to the list:
http://www.ursplugins.com/for the original question, this company is good as well.
- anyone got favorite reverb and delays as well?
Currently I only have Digidesign's DVerb and haven't got to it yet, but also have Trillium Lane Labs TL Space. Delays, just the standard and a cool Moogerfooger Analog Delay that came in the pack I got.
I downloaded the Sony Oxford (Sonnox) Reverb, it sounds really good. But I've also thought of going hardware and do an external buss with a Lexicon rack.
