Yes this is what i m currently attempting. Got inspired by coldcut at Greenbelt and want to start djing and vjing together a bit more.

Are you going to produce visuals by yourself?

Have started toi produce some. Also source some + extra from dvds etc!

I want to concentrate on ableton mainly but set up some patches in arkaos to be set to my dj set in ableton. Am pushing both to the max to see how they run on the smae machine. I might switch arkaos to my powerbook and link the two via firewire.

I'd have to invest in a proper laptop and very good camera (high-res, good lens, wide angle, etc). 

Since last week week have a really lo-fi solution for photography.
An ipod nano with function to slide photo's. I need to check if it works well with the beamer & AV-output.

For me equipment is not the most important. It's the visual itself. I'd luv to blend chill-out sets more with slow visuals. We sometimes have a Kaozpad + realtime camera and make visuals through live-collages. It's another lo-fi setting wich works well in a lose creative environment. But not for a club.

You should have checked before you posted this. Fortunately they are quite friendly to christians  ;)

Several members are AV artists utilising Ableton and Arkaos, Hambone is a generous expert who's ableton set up runs arkaos and his intelligent lighting rig.

I use Arkaos regularly too. the best tip is to have a seperate VJ but have looked at linking the two for my shows.

Look out for latency if you want the visuals in time with the audio. If you just want a random video show put your clips up and use the auto beat detection over rewire from the automation (it's also usefull when you want to go and get a drink during your set.)

PS. GL Arkaos on it's own will run on a celeron laptop my first big show with arkaos a year ago was on a 1.4 celeron I only tend to use 4 layers and FX and it handled it fine. I also have the Kaoss pad it's the business especially as I got mine brand new cheaply it also has a space in my studio.

Tip. Luma Key often provides a smoother result than background copy.

I have started using the two and had the auto sync going which was good i iliked the way i could controll when i wanted and then leave it to itslef when i was busy with ableton.

so Arkaos really good then?  I'm eventually gonna set me a set of DVJ-1000s, they're awesome.

I know id like some dvj 1000s too. And have u seen the new pioneer video mixer? Isaw a demo of it at the BMP show i went to last week.  But total cost for that mixer and couple of DVJs would be $10,000.. I need to do alot of gigs before i can afford!

Id like something like the dvjs plugged into arkaos for scratching images and audio. Also the numarks cdjs have midi output so they could be plugged into ableton and arkaos in theory. The numarks were being with the numark vj software.

..OH and arkaos is awesome. I wish i got into a few years back.

yeah, the video mixer article was in a email I get from Remix or one of the affiliates. Really nice, but man it was priced way too much.  It needs to be closer to the price of a Xone 3D before most people will consider it.

The DVJ's are not as bad when considering a CDJ goes for $800 less and they can do lot more.  I wanted to get another set of cd players, but after thinking about adding video to my setup, want to go with the DVJ's.  Plus I'm good at video editing so making my own material would be easy.  But I'm glad you started this, I'm gonna take another look at Arkaos.

yep, I just downloaded the trial.  Is there any tutorials on this thing?

The documents that come with it (in the download) are pretty straightforward and search on VJ forums as a guy used to put loads of turorial vids up.

The docs aren't good for how to use your content just how to get it to layer up nicelyand what all the effects do. Once you've got the basics and know how to map your midi controller to the various paramater it's easy.

one of the demo clips of the skate boarder with jumping over a little ramp or bar scratches quite well when he is in mid air!!!!

Also dont discount NUVJfor a more DJ orientated interface I had a good play with it at PLASA in september and the control is dead intuitive.

Also resolume  ( www.resolume.com ) for PC about the same price and has lots of easy controls which make a good show without having to watch over it every second.

I did a day this year mainly looking for LED architectural lighting to install at church as part of a complete rewire but checked out pretty much everything including the hippotiser serious bit of visual kit.

I am currently based in Middlesbrough UK.

Interesting story about the coldcut set at greenbelt.

They got all set up and their Edirol v4 (or maybe one of them) wasn't working.  afew frantic calls to Sue and Malcolm of Visions alt worship and malcolm was whisked from the beer tent to the alt worship venue with one of their techies to look at there and then on to main stage with their V4. The set wouldn't have been the same without it. I'm using it next sunday!

Arkaos is cool. I run it manually and from Abelton with Midi. Midi from Ableton also runs my light scenes on my DMX board. I also run Midi from Ableton to DMX to my relay pack to turn on fans to blow fog around and stuff. This is all to much fun! Any one care to trade original video clips?

man, I need to learn this then, almost makes it sound like I don't need my dad anymore to run the lights.  But I'm interested in the video.

Ok this is where i have got to: I have started setting up different patches and plan to have specific patches for certain tracks as well as more general ones to play along side other parts of a set. Basically where i dont have something set up for specific tracks.

I had a look at the rewire function but at the moment am going for a midi keyboard and setting arkaos to automation based on the audio.  So this will mean that in between mixing on ableton i can play on my midi keyboard and controll the visuals. When i am busy mxing with ablton. Arkaos will take over.

One question i have now is wether i could set arkaos up on my powerbook and get the automation to respond to the audio in feed from my mixer? Any ideas if this is possible?

I plan to progress to syncing the midi from abelton Jeremy k style and richie h style but not yet.

To get the powerbook running arkaos to respond to the music just feed the audio in to the laptop and set on auto it has a from audio button in the automation screen. The box at the bottom shows a waveform too.

Thought I'd post a couple of links to a gig I did with Visions church in york it's called transendence and is in the crypt of york minster. The guy leaning over the laptop in the first link is me running Arkaos I am controling the screens with pictures on rather than the ones that have the liturgy (words everyone speaks). At the start of the first clip the screen I rum is in 3 sections saying York minster, Visions and transendence.
