Title: Atlanta has about 3 months of water left
Post by: Dave Richards on October 15, 2007, 07:06:14 AM
Yeah... it's no joke. Pray for us. The worst part is that the Feds are draining our water to keep some freaking muscles alive. Sadly, I'm with Boortz (http://boortz.com/nuze/200710/10152007.html#drought). The Georgia National Guard needs to be ordered in to seize control of our main reservoir and stop that. If that doesn't happen, we're going to be on severe water rationing (http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/stories/2007/10/14/waterwoes_1015.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab).

wow, thats crazy. We were facing that this summer (2008) if it hadn't been so wet the summer just gone (2007). The previous summer and winter were both really dry (2006).

I think Trecise did a remix of a track by M.W.Smith which may well have a whole new meaning in these circumstances!

Prayin fo' y'all!

Hoard early, hoard often.

Seriously though, we've got outdoor watering restrictions up here where I live in Waterloo but that's where the comparison ends as your situation sounds a lot rougher.

Will pray.  Time for Dave to move to Milwaukee.  Then we can have groov fellowships. 8)   Hang in their Dave I know it's no joking matter.   God please make rain and give Atlanta much needed water, in Jesus Name Amen.

The sad thing is that they waited until just couple of weeks ago to put half the state on a total watering ban. Sadder still, Stone Mountain Park was planning to produce 200 tons of fake snow every day starting in November for the winter to have a "snow mountain (http://www.snowmountainpark.com/)" for sledding. Cool idea, bad timing. Public outcry got that shut down and all watering over at the Ted too :) Sorry Braves, you can play on dead grass next year.

deja vu ???  I think I commented on this but don't see it, you do another?

anyway, makes me think how far Biham is from this.  I know we're much smaller city, but hey we're 2 hrs from you.

He did make another one Daniel.

We don't have any sort of water ban up here, but as I thought about it....we did have a very short supply of rainfall this summer.

I wonder if we're in danger, and just way behind.  :smiley18:

well, isn't that ironic? "Waterloo" has no water. So it's just "loo". But even a loo (=toilet) needs water, so you're up the creek without a paddle - or water!

Well... our water is now 15ft below normal (http://www.myfoxatlanta.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail?contentId=4728144&version=3&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=1.1.1). The guy in the vid talks about how great the rain for the past 2 days has been. Well... the rain has stopped and we won't have any for about 5 days.

Meanwhile, the Governors of AL and FL are bashing GA (http://www.myfoxatlanta.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail?contentId=4731507&version=4&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=1.1.1).

Quote
"You can't expect Alabama to let Georgia take everything they want and just give us the leftovers," said Governor Riley.  Riley went on to say, "We've got to come up with a system that protects everyone's interests."

I don't care if they helped build the dam in the '50s. That was 50 years ago and they have KNOWN for over 20 years now that GA was growing out of control. They should have made other plans rather than suing us. Everyone has been irresponsible.

I just can't believe they're concerned about jobs when ppl over here could die of drought. Not only that, but if the water is gone from here, they'll loose those jobs anyway.

Well, maybe you should talk to your state officials and ask why they waited so long to put water restrictions on their residents. We've been in the same situation (although a bit better because we have the Tenneessee River to get water from) but we've had watering restrictions/bans since April.

But also, i hope you guys don't run out of water.

ya'll hadn't had any restrictions this past summer?

First, I've been under water restrictions for 2 years now if not more.
Second, yeah... those are county restrictions. MOST of the counties here did put their ppl under those EARLY this summer if not a year or two before.
Third, Yeah... I wonder why the STATE didn't put us under restrictions before now too.
Fourth, are your restrictions set by the state or your county?

Every STATE involved has been irresponsible. The counties may not have been.

Oh well... at least Coke and Stone Mnt. decided (after public outrage) to ditch the Snow Mountain (http://www.snowmountainpark.com/) idea. They were going to produce 200 tons of snow every day in ATLANTA. HELLOOOOOOO?!?!?!

I was just there on Monday and Tuesday playing some shows and it was pretty rainy the whole time.  Hopefully it helped.  A little.

Wait...I understand the reservoirs are drying, but what about pulling water from that HUGE source of water you guys have just to your south?

Title: Re: Atlanta has about 3 months of water left
Post by: Dave Richards on October 25, 2007, 09:49:39 PM
well... first... the southern part of GA isn't all that bad off. Second... what huge water mass??? You mean the Florida coast? I dunno. Apparently, they're incapable of using that water despite the fact it has them surrounded on three sides. Funny huh?

GA does purify some water from the Atlantic though. There just isn't a good way to ship it up stream. North GA isn't just north... it's higher up in elevation.

Well, regardless of inter-state discrepancies, I hope you guys come across some water soon.

But not too much, because that can be as bad as not enough.

yeah... I just hate the arguments that keep us from keeping our water. I mean... dead shellfish, 800,000 homes w/o power and jobs lost vs 5,000,000 people dead. Seriously.

I was just wondering whatever happened to your water supply?  Are you out of water?  Or did you solve your water dilema?

FL, GA, and AL are still fighting it. My county isn't allowing any outdoor watering. The main lake has risen a good bit, but we're still down over 10 ft from where we should be. It's still a serious issue, but we made it more than 3 months now.

when are they going to realise that you can build water purification systems on the back of existing powerstations on the coast. use the waste heat. as well as sell salt afterwards. yeah there is the problem of shipping it. but you could build one resevior neer the station and pump it at night when there is less electricity being used. kinda what they do with small hydro electrice plants. use excess of power at low use times to pump the water up high. then when they need it then can release it.

it is all about intergrated design.

not just oh we need a powerstation. so they just build that. why not heat water for the near by city or heat it.

grr

rant over, all be it not that major a one. lol

Move to Finland ;)

Finland has over 180,000 lakes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lakes_in_Finland), in a country roughly the size of England.

Just a reminder... how far above sea level is Finland?

Title: Re: Atlanta has about 3 months of water left

Lower than Atlanta.

You guys need to dig it out a bit... reclaim some ocean with the excess dirt/clay/mountains.

We're about a 4 hour drive from any water. PLUS... you should see what happens to Huston, Tx whenever it rains there. No lakes, yet it's only 30 ft above sea level and kinda concave. Lots of flooding.
