Title: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: Joel on April 03, 2007, 01:21:22 AM Not episodes 1, 2 or 3. I collected tons of Star Wars stuff and watched taped off of tv versions for ten years because I lived in the jungle. Then episodes 1 and 2 came out and i was so dissappointed i threw away 99% of anything starwars that i owned. however my favorite episode is episode 5. Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: Dave Richards on April 03, 2007, 06:45:15 AM 5 here too. I DO really like 3 though. 2 has some really good moments as well. 5 Just takes the cake.
Seriously though... you have to remember a few things when dealing with 1-3: 1) When you saw 4-6, you were a kid. You fell in love with the series through kids eyes. You're seeing 1-3 as an adult with the mentality that you don't like ppl messing with your childhood. 4-6 had some really horrid written at times and certainly some really bad acting as well. Granted... nothing is worse than Anakin saying "yippee" or whatever in EP1. Methinks Lucas forgot how little boys talk. You're kids will never really have Star Wars messed like we did with b/c it's done now. Their view of it will ALWAYS be through kids eyes. 2) 1-3 was really a royal era. The language, society, and body language all reflected more of Shakespear's time rather than modern times like 4-6. 4-6 was set in a more contemporary time period that was casual and... well... oppressed. This makes it a bit easier for us to relate to. 3) Jar Jar's sole purpose is to vote YES on starting that clone army. He's a moron. He's annoying (unless you are under 10 and then... through kids eyes... he's amazingly cool). He's unfortunately justified in the script. 4) Good actors who have won awards can't always make good movies... esp when they are making new episodes of films they loved as kids too. Of course... bad direction, script problems and more haven't helped. All I can say is I did like how Hayden portrayed Anakin. Why? b/c he captured the same whining brat emotion that Luke had. Because he was able to say more with his eyes than anything else which was important given the regal era 1-3 takes place in. Because I could believe his anger and intensity. Now... Samuel L Jackson was pretty much wasted money since most of the time he just sat there and brooded. Lucas really should have used more nobodies like he did in the original series. I just love the whole universe. Some moments really suck while others will always capture you love and imagination. Almost every scifi franchise is the same way. Man... I think it's about time for my annual Star Wars movies viewing :) Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: adidax on April 03, 2007, 11:22:52 AM My favorite was 3.....

Post by: john.christian on April 03, 2007, 11:43:07 AM 5 here too. I DO really like 3 though. 2 has some really good moments as well. 5 Just takes the cake. "I don't like sand. It's coarse, rough, irritating and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft…and smooth." "From the moment I met you, all those years ago, not a day has gone by when I haven't thought of you. And now that I'm with you again…I'm in agony. The closer I get to you, the worse it gets. The thought of not being with you—I can't breathe. I'm haunted by the kiss that you should never have given me. My heart is beating…hoping that kiss will not become a scar. You are in my very soul, tormenting me…what can I do? I will do anything you ask. [pause] If you are suffering as much as I am, please, tell me." Wow! That last one actually looked good on paper. Huh, I never liked that scene. Weird. Seriously though... you have to remember a few things when dealing with 1-3: 1) When you saw 4-6, you were a kid. You fell in love with the series through kids eyes. You're kids will never really have Star Wars messed like we did with b/c it's done now. Their view of it will ALWAYS be through kids eyes. It might've been "whoopie!". 2) 1-3 was really a royal era. The language, society, and body language all reflected more of Shakespear's time rather than modern times like 4-6. Shakespeare's time had a Roman-style Senate? 4-6 was set in a more contemporary time period that was casual and... well... oppressed. This makes it a bit easier for us to relate to. We're more "casual and oppressed?" 3) Jar Jar's sole purpose is to vote YES on starting that clone army. He's a moron. He's annoying (unless you are under 10 and then... through kids eyes... he's amazingly cool). He's unfortunately justified in the script. Stereotypes have proven funny in the past, I 'spects. 4) Good actors who have won awards can't always make good movies... esp when they are making new episodes of films they loved as kids too. Because he was able to say more with his eyes than anything else which was important given the regal era 1-3 takes place in. Because I could believe his anger and intensity. He was whiney. Luke did mature throughout the trilogy, though, didn't he? Now... Samuel L Jackson was pretty much wasted money since most of the time he just sat there and brooded. Lucas really should have used more nobodies like he did in the original series. It might've been funnier if they had him say "That's it! I've had it with these [mmm...tasty] Sith on the [mmm...tasty] Senate!" I just love the whole universe. Some moments really suck while others will always capture you love and imagination. Almost every scifi franchise is the same way. Count every odd-number Star Trek movie (and the tenth one, too, I've heard). Man... I think it's about time for my annual Star Wars movies viewing :) I don't think I myself have seen it since the Special Edition. Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: Dave Richards on April 03, 2007, 04:04:12 PM actually... ST 10 was written in part by a fan... so... it really didn't suck. I'll comment on some of the other stuff later... maybe :)
At least you know I can be critical of star wars now though right ;) Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: Joel on April 03, 2007, 04:17:16 PM ep 1, 2, and 3 had 1 or 2 redeeming qualities: Darth Maul fight scene. ok so, only one redeeming thing.
hayden did not in anyway reflect Luke, other than some of the scripted words, but acting wise. not even close. he has two faces, stiff and angry. hamill was angry too but he had more character in one minute on screen than hayden over the span of 4 wasted hours. Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: djdunamis on April 03, 2007, 05:54:16 PM ep 1 - Darth Maul and the fight scene and finally see actual Jedi's in action cause previously we only seen Luke til now Also pod race was cool.
ep 2 - alright, but Yoda fight scene was tha bomb. ep 3 - liked it the most out of the 3 and plus it was a finalize since we saw the movies in 4,5,6,1,2,3. Had better scenes than ep2. ep 4 - first I ever saw of course ep 5 - alright, still like Yoda in this, favorite quote comes from this movie. ep 6 - my favorite those are my highlights briefly, but 6,3,4 are my top Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... [I chose not to use a smiley] Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: finhead on April 04, 2007, 11:08:59 AM This one is easy for me. Nothing will ever top the first Star Wars. The good ol' days... back before there were any "episodes". Now we refer to it as ANH but it'll always be good ol' Star Wars to this fan.
Empire was great of course. Still, nothing will top the first one for me. Rob Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: Nathan V on April 05, 2007, 02:51:18 AM 6
Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: Junglepooh on April 05, 2007, 04:50:03 AM 6 is my favorite
Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: Matthew Risher on April 05, 2007, 05:32:34 AM It used to be 5, probably because I'm as much of a Star Wars geek as Dave. When 3 came out, I felt as if it justified 1 and 2 a LOT more. But you know what happened when 3 came out? I went and watched 4... and now I think 4 is my favorite. Some of the subtle tie-ins are amazing. For instance, notice how in 3, Obi-Wan starts rubbing his beard a lot when he's in thought? And he does that in 4. Nice touch! Plus, the scenes where Obi-Wan is talking with Luke about the Empire, the 'dark times', the past, is a LOT more meaningful. Even when he looks at R2-D2 when Luke says "He belonged to Obi-Wan Kenobi" is like, ten times more meaningful.
So, out of that, I have a TON more respect for 3 and 4 now. Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: Dave Richards on April 05, 2007, 07:24:34 AM Good words there Matt. 3 really did tie it all together nicely. Seriously though... if you really want some insight into vader/anakin... read Dark Lord. It talks A LOT about his first few months as Vader and his mental state during that time. To me, it was very telling.
Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: Matthew Risher on April 06, 2007, 05:40:39 AM Yeah, I did. I'm a dork... over the last year I borrowed three of those books from the library. Dark Lord, the Ep III novelization, and Labyrinth of Evil. They were all pretty good... well, astoundingly good if you compare it to the EU crap that came after the Zahn trilogy and made me stop wasting my time on Star Wars novels.
Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: Dave Richards on April 06, 2007, 07:24:50 AM Matt... you need to grab the New Jedi Order. I agree that there was some crap out there in the EU, but the ones I listed were rock solid.
Title: Re: Your Favorite Star Wars Episode Is... Post by: Matthew Risher on April 07, 2007, 07:53:06 AM Haw. Well, I might. But right now I have a stack of industry books I've got on hold. Sadly, I have to prioritize if I'm going to break into the marketing industry.
