Title: Whatever happened to: A.J. Mora & Scott Blackwell?
Post by: Dj Soundwav on December 08, 2006, 01:25:41 AM
Does anyone one have any information on their whereabouts? MyxRecords? Etc?

This might be old news to many of you... but hey, I'm brand new to the whole TF team. sue me. :smiley12:

AJ is the pastor at Hermon Free Methodist church in Los Angeles. He has pretty much retired from DJ'ing as God has turned his passion to Pastoral ministry. He still gets to spin occasionally.

Scott has become somewhat of a mystery lately. Last I heard he had a residency at a club in either Los Angeles or Hollywood. Myx Records has been on the longest hiatus in the world. Scott's public email address has become nonexisitant (even his myxrecords.com addy long before the site disappeared). He did relaunch his DJ website (djscottblackwell.com) a while back, only for that to strangely disappear very shortly after. I am assuming Scott prefer to be forgotten about as he only responds to a very small list of people anymore who REALLY know how to reach him. I'm not on that list anymore. That makes me a sad boy.  :(

Long story short, I can reach AJ anytime and can never reach Scott. The scene misses them both and wished them both well in wherever God leads them.

Yeah 404 is totally right on with AJ!

Scott Blackwell currently has a residency at a Club in LA.  Aside from working there regularly he likes to spend more time with his family, specifically his daughter Rebecca.  He was kinda burnt out from working 24-7, and he passed the torch to Liz to run Myx for awhile.

She ran the company for him while he was (and is) on leave.

She recently had some events happen in her personal life that have required her full attention, and if you knew what they were it would be clear why she's had bigger things to focus on than Myx.

As a result there is no one to run it right now, and the website has been taken down.

I guess they could have left the website up and just continued to plug old music that released many years ago without putting much new out, but another label seems to have that covered.

I think they did the right thing by pulling the plug for now, and we'll see if it ever comes back.

Last few times I've talked with her she's considered re-launching Myx in the future, but I'm not sure when she'll be ready, and I wouldn't blame her if she changed her mind, although I really hope to see it again in the near future.

Running a label takes a whole lot of time & energy, not to mention the financial end of things.

I tweaked it a bit from last time, but yeah I copied and pasted and then tweaked :)

This is starting to be a FAQ

jeje!

I knew this was a topic that's been discussed plenty. but, since Im too lazy to "search" I axed.

Thanks for the update 404 and Jarvis!  If you guys get talk to AJ, he's the reason I'm deejayn now and the reason why I wanted to open up a club in Miami to spin Gospel music to the masses. I'm well on my way :) www.clubtsunami.com

I def miss their stuff. That hard house and clubby beats. nothing like it. Too bad about Myx, but hey, fam is def first.

Im even "afraid" to ask about N*Soul. THAT should definitely be an FAQ.

I guess you've gotta respect Scott for being one of the originators, but saying that he's upset a lot of people through non payment of royalties so I think I'll say RIP.

Paul, most if not all of that as far as I know was Scott's replacement at N*Soul. I could be wrong, but every time I've heard the story it hasn't been Scott's fault.

you may know more than me Dave but personally speaking, I was let down by scott on various occations, when he says I'm going to do this and that and doesn't. These were big issues like he owed me 100 promos and I had no response from him, what does that say? devout had a contract it wasn't worth the ink or paper. I don't think I'm alone in this but of course we have to forgive as Christians, maybe thats why people can do this kinda crap and get away with it.

peace

Paul.

Post by: Carey on December 20, 2006, 09:31:11 PM
Scott has NEVER cheated anyone on royalties, that's all been done by his replacement at N-Soul.

Scott was notorious for getting so busy that other things fell through the cracks, like mailing CDs.  I can believe that he promised you 100 promos but you never got them, not because he was trying to rip you off, but because he kept so busy he never got around to mailing them like he should have.

I know another thing you were upset about is you were hoping for a Vinyl release off Devout, but Scott explained to Jamey that the song wasn't right for the first Vinyl remix from Myx.  He liked the remix, but it was too slow and laid back for the First Vinyl release from a new record company.  Vinyl is insanely expensive, you can't blame him for not making something he knew wouldn't sell.

I don't know your whole situation, but I'll never believe that Scott deliberately cheated you Paul.  I can believe that he blew it in some areas because he was trying to wear too many hats and do too many things without much help.

from everything I know about what you mentioned... Carey is right. BUt yeah... you might know more. I just know from my dealings that Scott had/has a bad habit of getting so busy that he can't get it all done and then sometimes makes a poor decision on who should pick up his slack.  Running a business isn't his strong suit. :(

I talk to Scott every month and AJ's sister Gabby started going to my church with her fiance and I also go to a bible study at my pastor/brother in law's house where AJ's  sister Gabby attends every week.  So I get the scoop from his sister that way and just generally AJ is pastoring a church in LA and living life being married and raising his family. The funny thing is that I did not know she was AJ's sis until about a month ago. BTW, Scott is doing alot of construction work, doing block walls, wiring and building studio's.  He is trying to get his C7 low voltage contractors license soon.

That's about as personal I am at liberty to get about scott. Pray for him.

My wife and I definitely don't share much of the same taste in music. I told her last night at dinner that it was really cool to actually see Scott Blackwell on TF. As I talked, she just kind of stared blankly at me until I mentioned Nitro Praise. Then she sort of realized who I was talking about.

OH... don't let that fool you Alex. YOu can't possibly listen to anything acid unless you are ON acid. In fact, there's a mandantory drug test that you have to take prior to listening to any Acid track that comes on during a dj's set. You just have to report to the back room.

As long as we're looking at his discogs... here (http://www.discogs.com/artist/Scott+Blackwell). Personally, I'd like to here his extended mix of ZZ Top's Sleeping Bag (http://www.discogs.com/release/370600). Now, Gap Band's "You Dropped a Bomb on Me (http://www.discogs.com/release/588816)" seems to be on itunes. It's nto labeled as You Dropped A Bomb On Me (Scott's "Deeper Than Most" Mix), but there is a 5:13 long mix, which I bet is his.

*announcer with a hushed voice* Once again we find dj/producer Scott Blackwell taken aback by his own talents which he apparently did not fully realize that he had. This should get very interesting. He is a fantastic DJ who played at all the legendary Gay clubs in Florida - Miami Salvation, and Key West - and New York City - The Saint, River West etc.... That pic was taken in his apt in Soho in 1983. He played with more feeling than any one I have ever seen.
