Title: How old is OldSchool!?
Post by: DWord on May 08, 2008, 02:09:53 PM
Oldschool: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldschool (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldschool)

Quote
Electronic Dance Music (EDM)

Oldskool (with a 'K', one word) is now a popular term that usually refers to a style of music popular in the early 1990s, which was at the time called breakbeat hardcore or rave music. The style fragmented in the mid 1990s but the "cheezy" Oldskool roots and even direct samples are easily found in many Happy Hardcore genre tracks as well as in other genres that share a common link with breakbeat hardcore. Oldskool/rave style parties are still widely held in the UK. Referring back to the music generally played at raves during the period 90-94 (the group Cappella is an example of Oldskool and rave music) that were staged by the likes of Fantazia, Rezerection, Raindance, Obsession, The Eclipse, Helterskelter and Perception. Several of these companies still stage events, alongside a number of newer names. ???

So, according to Wikipedia Olds'k'ool means 1990's rave music..
Then what do you call the funky in-between tracks in the 5 - 10 year range?
Is 2002 not cool enough for skool? OR 2000 even? :'(

SO anyway this article needs some editing, bad.. What do you guys consider Oldskool/Oldschool :smiley25:

I think you can't define it as just one thing ;)

but... in general, it is about early 90's techno or elements of that used in new productions. 2002 or 2000 is not oldskool and never will be. oldskool implies first generation

oldskool also applies to new music made in the same style.

So I'm getting the feeling that OldSkool should be described as a 'style' based off of a 90's sound. But then we'd have to sum up the genre into a stereotype.  :(

Or maybe a style based on a body of work? Maybe technology could be a 'sound' factor..

We should definitely edit it.

You should let it be. I wouldn't waste my time with defining a word like that.

 8) yeah boy, im all aboot da old skoo, infact i kick it old skoo quite alot. For me old skoo refers to things good music ie good edm of all sorts. 2nd id have to say old skoo? went out the window back in 2003 to say the least. From that time on, idk too much so I cant say much aboot it. From what I hear now, and back then, there was alot more anthems? and club bangers, now theres none of those as far as I am aware of. Then again, its nice to hear good music that just good period, keeping up with the game n whatnot. Andy Hunter s nu album rox.  :-X

"Re: How old is OldSchool!?"

All you have to do is ask Davo from Demulcent Records. He is the only one old enough to actually remember Old Skool

"Re: How old is OldSchool!?" -- Maybe I'm just the odd man out on this one, but when you say "OldSchool" to me it invokes thoughts of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five more than it does anything else.

if you've been listening to dance music for a while you can definately (sp) here a difference   in that 90's sound. i still prefer that sound than a lot of todays trax. its not that i think they are better its just a personal preference.
