Post by: full.o.joy on April 13, 2008, 01:14:48 PM
Starting Monday April 14th "Motor Club" can be purchased from the Sheltershed.Com website.
Just click Enter Store (right below the Enter icon) on the main page and you will find it along with past releases. It will soon be available from Soundstation and various other download sites. We will be updating this site with the newest info as it comes in.

That was from Craig. This is from me:

My brother and I have been doing electronic music for a long time. For about 20 years. He has done many Live P.A's over the years and has written tons of tunes. In my opinion he is one of the best unknown dance music artists out there. Now he is a vital force in Sheltershed. He not only plays drums for them live but he brings his funky breaks and love for minimal techno and trance to the songwriting of the already hard industrial sound of Sheltershed. The result is a powerful, thumping yet funky mix that you just HAVE to hear!

Check out the new release! You will be blown away!!!!!

Here's my 2 cents on this album: It's better... Much better and I'm impressed with the progress the guys have made on this latest offering. I can't believe Im actually saying this, but I've been listening to sheltershed all week. Now before Carey starts telling people I've gone soft, let me say that Motorclub has some problems that make it sound pretty amateur. It's not consistently cohesive, as both the individual tracks, and the album as a whole tend to feel a bit random in the arrangements. Too often random sounds seem to pop in abruptly at obscure times or for odd amounts of time. This is a problem on a larger scale too, as some tracks don't seem to fit the overall flow of the project. I kinda get the feeling that the producers haven't mastered the art of subtlety when it comes to applying a really cool sound to a song, and a cool song to an album. The most frustrating thing about the project in my opinion, however, is that some of the solid song concepts attempted on the album are, at least in part, poorly executed. The first track on the album is a great example of this, as the overly clanky and abrasive application of the song parts rob the track of it's intended energy. Instead of a semi-dark, peak hour florida breakbeat, the end product was pushed over the edge, winding up as being just semi-annoying. For this song in particular, I would have suggested a more melodic bass line, or at least something a little more organic to counterbalance all the dark electro clanky madness. As it is, I keep wanting to bob my head to that song, but the abrasiveness won't let it loop me out. It reminds me of clanging metal.

Now, with all that said, let me also say this: this cd in at least a couple of ways, is a huge breath of fresh air. First and foremost for me, is that it has some old-school influences in the most awesome of ways. The songs are constructed in such a way that they actually take you somewhere outside of the now uber-typical "check out my perfectly produced orchestration" modus operandi. Don't get me wrong, it's hard not to appreciate how awesome dance music producers have become at their craft over the last few years, but lately the music is all about perfect full sound, and the days of raves, raw energy, and true musical journey are long gone. Motorclub TOTALLY reminds me of the EDM from back around 1994-1995 in this way. It's not perfect, it's far from it, but dang it if it doesn't suck me right in at times, and make me start to get lost in it's unpredictable turns. I think some hooks the guys use on the album are plain awesome(even if they aren't always used perfectly) and their are moments on the disc where I thought to myself "man I would have LOVED to have seen these guys perform this song live at Fusion". I also like how some of those moments remind me of some of my favorite old school music, like Uberzone's moondust EP. There's a nice inclusion of vocoded vocal samples, a tiny touch of that 1996 Josh Wink acid tweakiness, and plenty of other stuff that today's producers shouldn't have abandoned.

I should say that I don't intend to describe motorclub as a retro album, because it absolutely isn't. It has plenty of attributes that make it unmistakeably 2008, but to my pleasant surprise it seems that unlike most current day producers, sheltershed has decided to embrace the best of the past while making the music of the future. Now honestly they've got a good ways to go if they want to be considered master-craftsmen, or if they even want to make a real impact artistically, but for the first time I see a spark flickering, and I think the light is coming on. I'm actually wondering if perhaps they might soon find markable success as an electronic "jam band" of sorts, or maybe one of the rare artists who makes music for those who still actually want to dance to edm they can throw their hands up to AND get lost in(rather than the oversexed, cheesey, or snobby stuff dominating clubs of late). For a guy like me, raised on lynyrd skynyrd and chemical brothers, that would be just fine. I definitely recommend all you tasty people check this one out.

The review I had in my head is MUCH harsher. Bill's gone over to the light side.

Dave,

I could have picked this cd apart a lot more on the technical side of things. In this digital era, where edm has become an endless sea pre-packaged and soulless "perfection", discs like motorclub, that just have "the funk"(even if only at sporadic moments), are becoming few and far between.  I think just about every producer on tastyfresh could used a little more of that. Again, just my two cents.

actually, my beefs with it are not how slick it is, but the programming and arrangement. Period. I don't want to go into more detail (now anyway).

I actually agree Dave. I hope I was clear about that part in my review, but I wrote it in 15 minutes after getting home from work this morning(I was really tired).

From sitting in on a writing session with the guys I have to say that they were trying their best to let Shane (my brother) have his writing style be obvious while keeping the hard industrial sound that Dan (heldbywill) brought to the mix with the last album. If I can say something for my brother, Bill, the acid tweeks, old school feel, and general funk that you can get lost in , is my brother all the way. That is definitely his contribution to the songwriting. As far as the many different varieties of music goes, which makes it not so cohesive, Craig wanted it that way.

That is my defense of the record. They actually had tons more music and parts of songs that they just couldn't fit on this record. They will continue to grow as they write together.

Bill,

Dude- thanks so music for taking the time and energy to review Motor Club. We seriously appreciate any and all feedback regarding Sheltershed music, especially from industry leaders – I’m not just saying that – it’s true man. You gave us many kudos and encouragement with much of your analysis of the project. Also – I hope you feel privileged that you are on my “special person list” and received one of the Motor club promo CD’s – hahaha .

The comment /concern regarding cohesiveness as it relates to Sheltershed music has historically been a critic’s focal point over the past 10 years. I know you were specifically identifying that as an issue with this latest release, however it really has been an area of discussion/ argument on several occasions when it comes to Sheltershed music overall. We have always resisted falling into a specific musical genre. In fact, it has been fairly natural for us not to succumb to this phenomenon of the modern day artist/producer. Collectively, Sheltershed members’ musical interests & love for many genres have driving the song writing and production of Sheltershed music for the past decade. Consequently, when we release a project like Motor Club, it reflects this characteristic. As you well know, Motor Club consists of several different genres such as electro, break beat, psy trance, industrial, digital hard core, down tempo, hard dance, etc.  (just to mention a few). That may be one reason it does not have that cohesiveness that you identify/desire. Not to mention, our musical palate is extensively rich and diverse and consists of much more than a one trick pony in a bedroom studio with a groove box and an Oxygen 8 (no offense to any producer that uses a groove box and Oxygen 8, but you know what I’m saying about how easy it is to get a “cohesive sounding album” when producing with only a few pieces of gear and a lap top).

The fact that Sheltershed has not identified it self with one specific genre of music has really been to our advantage in the bigger picture. For one, we have an expanded listening audience/base that reaches way past the Christian EDM scene and Tastyfresh. In addition, I’m pretty cretin this another reason we have been asked to perform at so many diverse venues/ events / projects such as Autobahn, Anvil Festival (industrial/ goth venue), Asylum, work with Volition Inc on tracks for the PS2 game Summoner, Dark Rave, Ichthus, Cornerstone Dance Barn and most recently the Fat Calf Unified Underground venue.

Motor Club was not writing as one cohesive consistent sound that the listener can get lost in while on a road trip (such as a “journey” – that many producers seem to strive for these days which has become tiresome), however it is a peek into what is going on in the heads/minds and studio of the Sheltershed members & what we think is “happening” – diverse as it is. Oh and by the way – the “clanking” in Access Violation that interrupts your pleasurable head bobbing is exactly what our hard core listening Flaming Fish brathas love about that track as it creates some form of musical dissonance/anxiety that they crave.

Again, thanks so much for your honest review/critique of Motor Club. I hope there is more to come and look forward to it. By the way – We will take you up on that vision you mentioned with Sheltershed performing live at the Fusion. Is Tom R. still down there with you?

Hey man,

I really do appreciate the copy of the CD. Please keep me on the list. I would say that the most important thing for you to do is to be true to yourselves and what God has you doing. Im just trying to do my part by holding your music to the highest standards when giving you an honest opinion. For the sake of discussion, the cohesiveness I was referring to wasn't so much a problem of too many genres explored. It was more that I didn't feel all the concepts were effectively executed(or in other words just not quite up to par). Again, that's just my honest opinion. I hope you understand that I actually do like the cd. Regarding Fusion, I haven't been doing anything in that regard or at the Murray Hill for almost 2 years now. As far as I know Tom is still there, and I know he'd love to book you at the right event. He told me so. Im actually moving to southern Ohio in August, so maybe we can get together or collaborate on something in the midwest some time. Im looking forward to seeing Bryan again and maybe finally meeting you guys.
