Title: i just did my taxes and got throttled
Post by: Doug Theodore on April 08, 2008, 09:35:50 AM
yeah... i owe alot of money.  I am not going to share details but well over a grand.  Pretty crippling for me.  I could use some prayer in general.  I am pretty depressed right now.  Not too sure what to do.  I am probably getting another job thru the summer as I applied for an extension.

WAIT... you were still married for over half the year. Did you file as married, filing separately and did you claim your kids? If not, you need to.

I don't know how similar filing taxes is in the US compared to Canada. Can you do paper vs online?
We did ours online this year and it calculated my wife and my numbers, and applied the various benefits dynamically to whatever person, to receive the best tax rate for the overall family. It was well worth the 20$ fee. I don't know what your options are like in the US.

no she claims the kids and i file single.  that is how it works.  1st year is a killer...that is what she said.  I gotta go in and fix my tax thing at work.

anyway...

Wow... yeah that was totally different for us. Getting married was a lovely tax break for me. Again, are you sure that's being calculated to your benefit?

jonathan, I got divorced in 2007 ::)...that is the problem.  Me having the deductions taken out for the 9 months i was married hurt me when i filed.  She has the full-custody of the kids and i get visitation.  That means I do not get to claim them at all.

Had a rough day and it I really dont know what I am going to do...anyway I covet your prayers!

Hold on, I'm not so sure about that.

OK... I'm wrong :(

My apologies. I assumed you married someone with kids. Stupid assumptions.

Praying for you bro.

Wow. That seems like a mess. I know nothing about filing as a family, or with kids, or anything of the sort. It doesn't seem right that your ex gets all the breaks. (assuming she does, I have no idea)

Did you know there is NO LAW that you must file federal taxes to begin with? Honest to goodness.

Problem is...

1) No file this year, you no get rebate. (http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=177937,00.html)
2) No file, you go to jail for tax evassion. (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=tax+evasion+convicts&btnG=Search)
3) What you are saying isn't true. (http://docs.law.gwu.edu/facweb/jsiegel/Personal/taxes/JustNoLaw.htm)

For FEDERAL, I dunno about state.

Tell me where the law for federal taxes resides. If one is to be arrested for not filing taxes what about the Amish and Mennonites and Native Americans?

federal taxes are implied and necessary for the function of the government. you want the freedoms you get in america, you get to pay taxes. thats life.

native americans have serious exemptions, as they should. amish and mennonites sometimes get off because they arnt actually paid, if they arent paid, the government cant tax them.

It's called the TAX CODE Title 26. A CODE is a collection of LAWS. The link I provided is to george washington university. They explain it in detail there.

Actually, until just about the great depression, nobody in the US had to pay income taxes. Until then, the fed pretty much only provided for our defense and a few other things. It too a constitutional amendment (the 16th to be exact) to get that through. I want a recount. Actually, I want the fair tax.

It's getting tons of support. It really is. The books are getting the word out. They do rallys from time to time that sell out stadiums. Seriously, it has a chance. Of course, the best chance was with Huckabee.

Doug I'm so sorry to hear this bro. My parents got separated when i was 12 and i moved from California to Kansas with my mom cause she has custody rights and had a job replacement. Hardest thing i have ever had to do. But the Lord is in full command. without this i wouldn't be a producer/dj. I wouldn't know any of you guys. And i wouldn't have the love of my life, my girl. I will keep you in my prayers.

I hate owing money. My wife forgot to file some unemployment she got a few years back and they did an audit of us. She now owes them for the unemployment she received.  We have been paying on it for the last few months and the "refund" we will get will go right back to the IRS. The first year we were married we owed almost $1000. We found a tax guy who knows a lot about the laws and he has put us in the green ever since.

Doug, I will be praying for you. I know this sucks. Too bad Alan Keyes dropped out of the election in 2000.
